Lebanon: The United Nations called on Thursday for children and schools to be protected in Lebanon, where hostilities have prevented nearly 100,000 children from returning to classrooms as the school year begins.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said damage, destruction, insecurity and displacement were keeping children out of school, citing national authorities.
"Children must be able to return to school safely and without any fear," he said.
Lebanese authorities reported 37 schools totally destroyed and 101 severely damaged. Around 20 per cent of school-age children were displaced during the escalation, while hundreds of schools have served as shelters.
UN peacekeepers recorded 152 Israeli violations of Lebanese airspace over three days, alongside 24 airstrikes and incursions by Israeli patrol boats.
Dujarric said Israeli drones continued dropping explosive-filled jerrycans in southern Lebanon, with at least 11 explosions recorded near al-Mansouri on Monday and Wednesday.
Despite ongoing hostilities, peacekeepers facilitated 17 humanitarian missions between those days.
